Getting to Yes…With a Little Help from Caffeine

5 June 2006 by Tammy Lenski

You’ve no doubt heard of “getting to yes,” either the term or the book. Well, it may just have gotten a wee bit easier…with about two cups of coffee (or the equivalent amount of caffeine).

File this one in the category of strange negotiating tools: Yesterday’s edition of the European Journal of Social Psychology announced a project in which University of Queensland researchers asked people their attitudes about voluntary euthanasia before and after reading persuasive arguments that were against their initial beliefs. Before reading the arguments, participants drank orange juice either with caffeine or without. The result? The Australian researchers found that “with caffeine consumption we are more likely to attend to, and agree with, persuasive arguments.”

What a hoot.
