Our big, goofy Newfie, Hugo the Huge, died a week ago today. I held him in my arms as he passed and I’ve cried a river since. One hundred pounds less dog in a house sure is noticeable.
It’s been a tough dog year for us, two of our elder statesmen passing over that time, their old bodies telling them it was time to move on.
Both Hugo, the big guy, and Luigi, the little guy, were occasional fodder for posts here at Conflict Zen®. In part to cope with my own grief and in part to shine a light on their lives, I’ve gathered a few of the articles that mention or feature them:
- What drool and dog hair taught me about problem solving
- How to win an argument: Mr Bean drives a hard bargain
- Luigi’s recipe for assertiveness success
- How home-made dog food is like effective conflict resolution
- The Shamu Maneuver causes a stir
Rest in peace, my friends.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your dogs. Please hang in there.
Oh, Tammy, I’m so sorry to hear that. My condolences.
Marvin and Pace, thanks for your kind thoughts. It means a lot when people reach out and say hello at moments like this.

Hi Tammy,
I’m so sorry to hear about Hugo’s passing. Losing family members is so hard, and no words really help. But it sounds like he head a great life, and was a blessing to you folks.
Time will bring peace…

Lars, thank you from across the ocean. My husband and I are heading to Sweden next summer — his grandfather grew up there (not sure what region).
Lynne, time does bring peace about it yes. And there would not be such sadness had there not been so much joy with our big lummox.
Oh, Tammy, this makes me so sad for you and Rod! I know how much Hugo and Luigi meant to you both, and can only imagine how much you must miss them. Steve and I have been thinking of you constantly since we heard the news. Sending you love from Marblehead!
I’m sorry to hear about your loss Tammy. I can relate as just over a month ago my best friend Nugget had passed on as well. I wrote a blog post dedicated to him here http://www.anthonyrussoblog.com/Anthony/2009/05/nugget-we-will-miss-you/
I’m looking forward to the end of work today as his Urn will be delivered and he comes home for the final time. It will be another emotional weekend in my home, but it will be good to have him back with us.

Anthony, I’m so sorry to learn about Nugget. I just read your post about him – no wonder he melted your heart when he was a pup and was such a friend for so many years. My heart goes out to you.
Thanks Tammy. I’m sure he is having a great time running around now with his new friend Hugo.
