Today Is Conflict Resolution Day

19 October 2006 by Tammy Lenski

Today is Conflict Resolution Day, recognized internationally on the third Thursday in October.

What will you do in the spirit of the day? Here are some ideas:

  • Announce it at meetings you attend today and invite colleagues to spread the word as well.
  • Reach out to someone from whom you’ve been alienated or estranged. Sure, it takes courage, yet you can choose to keep it simple. Dial the phone and say, “I was reading that today is Conflict Resolution Day and I was thinking how much I’ve missed you.”
  • At dinner tonight, ask your kids to brainstorm three things they can do to reduce bullying at school.
  • Make a personal commitment—aloud or privately to yourself—to get better at a single conflict management skill. Maybe you want to practice not interrupting. Or being more direct about your concerns. Or, next time someone disagrees with you, you commit to asking questions instead of defending or convincing.

What will you do?

Tammy, one thing I try is to give words of encouragement, no matter what the situation. When I focus on doing this it makes all the difference in the world and brings collaboration and conciliation more than conflict. Thanks for the great post. I had no idea it was conflict resolution day.
